Learning Journey Inspires Children’s Book Series by TVAH & LSOA Parent
For Mayra Ceballos, learning is more than something that happens behind a screen; it’s an adventure waiting to unfold outside. The El Paso-based mom of four and Texas Virtual Academy at Hallsville (TVAH) and Lone Star Online Academy at Roscoe (LSOA) parent recently turned her family’s experience with school-at-home into an inspiring new children’s book series titled Emma’s Learning Adventure.
The series was born from Mayra’s desire to support her daughter Emma, who has autism and ADHD, and learns best through hands-on exploration and visual storytelling. “I started noticing Emma struggled to focus in traditional ways,” Mayra shared. “She learns differently. She needs to see things, touch them, and connect them to the world around her. That’s when I thought, why not create something just for her?”
Each book follows a young girl named Emma as she explores nature and discovers animals, plants, and insects across the Texas landscape. From lizards and horned toads to coyotes and the elusive kangaroo mouse, Emma’s adventures combine curiosity, science, and creativity, encouraging children to explore and learn beyond the screen.
Mayra, who emigrated from Colombia 20 years ago, says her goal is to inspire families to see that every child learns in their own unique way. “Every kid has their own way to learn,” she explained. “For Emma, it’s through nature and art. She paints what she sees and remembers it that way. I want other parents to know learning can happen anywhere.”
Her storytelling style mirrors the flexibility and creativity she’s found in online learning. “K12 has given us the freedom to adapt to Emma’s pace and interests,” she said. “Writing these stories made me realize how much potential there is to blend nature and education.”
Emma’s teacher at LSOA was among the first to read her book and praised its structure and purpose. Encouraged by that feedback, Mayra has since published the first book on Amazon and is already working on the net iteration, which will focus on insects and plants that Emma discovers on their outdoor adventures.
Ultimately, Emma’s Learning Adventure reflects a mother’s love and determination to help her child see the world as her classroom. “Learning has variations,” Mayra said. “Kids can learn every day, in their own way. We just have to let their curiosity lead.”
