Standing Up for Kindness Every Day, Not Just Today

Stories & Spotlights

At Texas Virtual Academy at Hallsville, we proudly joined schools and organizations across the world on November 21 in recognizing International Stand Up to Bullying Day, a global movement encouraging people to take a visible stand against bullying and create safer, more supportive communities.

But while this day serves as a powerful reminder, the key message is something we strive to live out every single day: kindness, compassion, and connection matter, and they are choices we can make in every interaction.

What Bullying Looks Like Today

Bullying doesn’t always show up as it once did on playgrounds or in hallways. Today, hurtful behavior can happen through screens, chat boxes, social platforms, or subtle exclusion. At TVAH, we take this responsibility seriously. When a student shares that they feel embarrassed, unheard, or left out, we know that moment has the power to shape their confidence and well-being.

How TVAH Builds Safe, Supportive Spaces

Creating a safe online learning environment is intentional. At TVAH, we focus on digital citizenship, empathy, and giving students multiple trusted pathways to seek support. One place we see this in action every day is inside the K12 Zone, our interactive virtual campus.

The K12 Zone gives students a safe place to hang out with friends, participate in clubs, and explore interests. Staff are always present to ensure student safety, but we also step back intentionally so students can practice communicating with kindness.

When something unkind is reported, we meet with students to discuss how their words or actions may affect others. And we see the growth firsthand, students reminding peers when chat begins to turn negative, offering encouragement when someone shares a poem or personal goal, and cheering each other on simply for showing up as themselves.

The Power of Standing Up

Our counseling team often tells students that standing up once creates awareness, but standing up consistently creates a culture. We encourage students to check in with themselves by asking three guiding questions before they communicate:

  • Is it true?
  • Is it kind?
  • Is it necessary?

If the answer is no, we can choose a different response, and that choice can change the tone of a conversation, a classroom, or even an entire school year.

A Community That Cares

International Stand Up to Bullying Day is an important reminder, but at TVAH, we believe in showing up for each other year-round. We’re proud of the compassion our students show and the character they continue to build. No student should ever doubt their value, and no bystander should ever believe their voice doesn’t matter.

Join us in creating a culture of kindness—every day. Learn more about how TVAH empowers students to stand up against bullying and build safe, supportive spaces
