Middle School Information for Military Students and Families

At TVAH Elementary School, we understand the unique challenges that come with relocating as a military-connected student. To ensure a smooth transition, our campus provides a comprehensive virtual transition program that includes:

• A welcome survey sent by the military liaisons upon enrollment to identify student needs and interests.
• A frequently updated Smore newsletter with helpful information, resources, and support services.
• Introductions to key staff members, including teachers, advisors, counselors, and military liaisons during orientation to help students feel connected from the start.
• A guided walkthrough of learning platforms including Canvas and IXL, so students understand how to access lessons, complete coursework, and submit assignments as well as an introduction to Engageli so students can make the most of live class sessions.
• A designated space in the K12 Zone for military-connected students to connect, share experiences, and build peer relationships.
• Military family liaisons will host a Town Hall specifically for all military-connected families who still have questions after orientation sessions.

This transition program ensures that our military-connected students are welcomed, supported, and set up for success from the moment they join our virtual campus.

• Extracurricular activities include optional, quarterly in-person outings.  Virtual options will always be available to all students.  
• Virtual social hours and regular check-ins will be hosted by a military liaison to foster a sense of community amongst military-connect students.

Struggling students have different opportunities for support. All TVAH students have complete access to IXL, they may attend additional live sessions with their teachers, and they may work with our interventionists. TVAH students also have access to Varsity Tutors, an on-demand AI-enhanced tutoring platform.

• Students must log into the TVAH online learning platform, Canvas, every school day. Please see our attendance smore here for more details or our attendance policy.
• Students are expected to complete all asynchronous lessons within Canvas daily.
• Students must attend all Class Connect sessions (CCs) unless they are marked as optional (-OPT) or unless they are enrolled in our Flex program (see information on this in the Flex section). If a student misses a CC, or just wants to review what was covered, they can access the recording at any time. Course work is posted within individual classes in the Online Learning System (OLS) and may include readings, discussions, writing assignments, quizzes, and tests. It is expected that all work is completed as scheduled, but students are not penalized for late work. Zeros are entered the day after assignments are due, and students can continue to submit assignments for full credit until the lock dates at the end of the semester. 

Students are automatically allowed to redo a failed or missed assignment one time (for a total of two attempts), and they can request a third attempt from their teacher.  

Texas Education Code [28.0211 and 28.0213] and House Bill 1416 require schools to provide accelerated instruction and targeted support to students who do not achieve “Approaches” or higher on their assigned STAAR test. This accelerated instruction will be in up to two subjects, prioritizing math and reading language arts and must be provided during the school year following the referenced STAAR test. TVAH has partnered with IXL Learning to offer adaptive instruction 24/7 so students can complete their tutoring hours at any time of day. Learning coaches who do not wish for their students to participate in HB1416 tutoring via IXL may opt out. IXL will still be required in their regular courses.

Students at TVAH Middle School are welcome to enroll in the FLEX program during open-enrollment periods throughout the school year. Under this program, live class connect sessions are optional for these students, with some exceptions, including C&CP classes. This is an excellent program for motivated, responsible students, but it is not for everyone. Teachers will be available to support the student as needed, but it will not be the same level of support as is available to non-flex students.

To remain in the Flex program, students must:

• Maintain 70% or above in all courses.
• Attend bi-weekly Flex teacher check-in sessions.
• Respond to outreach communication within 48 hours.
• Attend all required sessions (MTSS, EB, Dyslexia, SPED/IEP, C&CP, AP).
• Maintain daily course activity (must occur before 10:59pm each day).
• Attend all required in-person state testing.
