From Kitchen to Cook-Off: TVAH Student Earns Spot in National Cook-Off 

For many students, finding time to explore creative passions outside of school can be a challenge. For Isla P., a Texas Virtual Academy at Hallsville (TVAH) student, her flexible schedule became the perfect recipe for success—helping her turn a love for cooking into a national achievement. 

Isla, a high school student with a talent far beyond her years, recently earned a spot as one of five national finalists in the K12 Cook-Off, thanks to her original dish: Parmesan Herb Crusted Salmon. She will represent Texas at the national cook-off finals on June 6 at the Kitchen of Purpose in Arlington, Virginia. 

Isla’s journey into cooking began at home, watching her mom prepare meals. “That’s where it all started,” she says. “I just loved being in the kitchen and trying new things.” What began as a family activity soon turned into a personal passion—and eventually, an award-worthy skill. 

Balancing school and a growing interest in the culinary arts became easier when Isla enrolled at TVAH. The school’s flexible learning environment gave her the time and space to practice her craft while keeping up with her academic goals. “The assignments aren’t overwhelming, so I have time to cook, experiment, and still do well in school,” Isla shared. 

As she prepares for the national stage, Isla says the most exciting part has been the experience itself—stepping into the world of competitive cooking and seeing how far her passion can take her. Supported by her family and fueled by curiosity, Isla is already thinking about the future. “I’ve always wanted to cook just for fun, but now I’m thinking it could be a real career someday.”
